When I met this Hooch Bag, her name was Brenda. And let me tell you she was full of badness -- booze, pills and...never you mind. Why, it's a wonder she wasn't locked up in the clinker for all the naughtiness she's played part in. But mysteriously, she had a change of ways when it was decided that she was to become the gift of a five-year-old. She went into the Hooch Bag Protection program, changed her name to...well...I can't say, and has transformed herself from a bawdy old bag into a shimmery example of sweetness.

When you're planning a getaway with your besties, (or beasties....which ever term fits), a naughty-but-nice Hooch Bag -- packed with maybe some mood altering candy pills, a wad of funny money, some chewing gum cigarettes and even a discrete nip -- might be just what the doctor ordered to get the party pumping.

That's exactly what a high roller from Michigan had in mind when she picked up a few of my loaded ladies for a girls-only getaway to Miami. Oh, this Michigan Madame, or MM for short, is a big spender and carted off several of my hard-working beauties. I'll tell you more about her purchases later, if she's not already in the slammer. For now, here's the tale of how in less than 24 hours a golden goddess named Ingrid changed her alias two times -- from Ingrid to Claire and then Claire to, well, a name I cannot disclose for fear of ....well... I'd rather not say.

Hey, when they're payin', my high kickers'll go by any name they want!

She started out as Ingrid, a beaded dazzler packed with chewing gum cigarettes, a ton of funny money and a nip of port. Oh, and hidden in there is also a red pipe. Hey, I don't ask 'em what they're smoking. It's none of my bees wax. But MM decided to keep Ingrid for herself,

MM then asked me if I might send along the enchanting Marilyn as well. I can totally see Marilyn's allure with her toxic mix of happy pills and vodka all wrapped up in golden goodness. But as luck would have it, I had to inform MM that Marilyn had flown the coop.

I told MM, however, that I had an innocent pretty by the name of Claire who hadn't beenhooched up. I sent sent her the picture above, saying that I could tart her up to make her look like Marilyn.

And here's how she turned out. Like I said, I can't reveal her name, or else....

What I can say is that these shimmering lovelies are flying high to the Midwest en route to some bawdy badness in the Florida sun.

I've called this piece of shiney, leather goodness Vanessa since I met her. She's tired of hanging out with me and the other gals and is ready for a good time!

Claire thinks she's French, but I doubt it. She was made in the 1960s for a shop called Goubaud de Paris, but her "After Six" Made in the USA label gives her away. (Snooty New Yorkers!)

Once again, I'm showing off some before photos of my Hooch Bags. After they get filled with a ton of funny money, a nip of booze, some packages of candy cigarettes and a vintage surprise, these hard working gals will be ready for a night on the town.

This patent Meyers bag for Saks Fifth Avenue appears to be the peak of chic-ness, but it wouldn't take much to transform her into the peak of freak-ness!

I've called this Susan Gail Original Lulu since I met her. And she is a lulu. But like my other lovely ladies, she'll change her name for the right offer.

This beaded and sequined Richere bag by Walborg appears as innocent as a spring flower. I won't tell you what she's been up to over the winter!

This Jorelle number is French....need I say more?

Oh she's all wrapped up in beads and sequins, but this gorgeous gal from the 1960s gets funky once the sun goes down.

This shimmery, white beaded La Regale bag from the 1960s is a perfect foil for what could be her racy contents!

My gals don't come out very often unless they're all hooched up with a ton of funny money, a nip of the hard stuff and a vintage surprise, but here are some of my lovelies just looking for the right person to snap them up.

Even without their naughty-but-nice wrappings, my beauties are anything but Plain Janes.

Now this satin bag from the 1960s has been going by the name of Jackie. She'll change it in a flash since her identity is difficult to verify.

This glamorous, 1950s velvet clutch by Garay is is chic and demure....but once she hits the town all bets are off.

This vintage velvet MM clutch from the 40s is understated...until you fill her deep pockets with a bunch of hooch and a ton of funny money.

Oh she's a looker, but we can't tell how old she is. Is it the lift or the lack of identity?

Ain't she a dame? This 1960s beaded lady will turn some heads.

These gals are working hard to find a new home. They're tired of being cooped up and are all hooched up with candy cigarettes, a nip of booze and a vintage surprise, ready for a night on the town. They appear under their aliases, but will change their names -- for the right price.

You've met Ingrid before. She's a saucy gal covered in bugle beads. She's not really a vintage bag, but she's a partier and it shows.

Sofia is a true collectable. Her metal frame was made by Rodo for Bergdorf-Goodman in the 1960s. She's got a story to tell. Just give her a nip and she'll gab all night long.

Bianca has partied it up in her day. It's hard to tell how old she is, but her Whiting & Davis gold mesh frame is in mint condition and possibly from the 1960s. Just give her a smoke and a shot of tequilla and she's yours!

Ingrid isn't so much a vintage bag, but I can tell you she's been around the block a few times. Why, just look how she's showing off her nip of tequila and a wad of bills. But then there's the prissy fan and the black-and-white mid-century photographs stuffed inside. Is there more to this bawdy and beaded character than meets the eye.

Old Bag, New Tricks!

Here's another oldie from the past, but with gift-giving time coming up, I thought this might give you some ideas.

As you may know, I make Hooch Bags that make a perfect little something for that saucy, someone special in your life. Basically, they're vintage bags filled with funny money, a nip of booze, a vintage surprise and candy cigarettes making for a naughty-but-nice gift. It's like a party in a handbag -- all concealed in pretty wrappings

This is one of the first bags I made last year out of a 1960s satin, beaded clutch in perfect condition that I ran across at a Housing Works thrift shop. And since my best gal pal Bevy Smith's birthday was coming up, it seemed predestined for her.

About the same time as finding the bag, I was dumfounded to discover a heap of vintage shopping bags in the recycling pile. I gasped when I spied among them a Bonwit Teller bag from the famous department store that closed its doors in 1990. Now this bag held special significance for me, since it reminded me of the stories Bevy shared with me about her parents purchasing school clothes for her and her siblings at Bonwit Teller and the warm memories she holds for a department store that only lives in memory.

From there, everything started to fall magically into place. I took the beaded bag and filled it with miniature bottles of rum and vodka and nestled them among bills of faux dough. Bevy's own Hooch Bag had finally started to materialize! Enough money in the world couldn’t buy Bevy the jewels she deserves, so I settled instead on the gloriously photographed book, Alchemy: A Passion for Jewels by Temple St. Clair, the inimitable jewelry designer, and wrapped it up in lavender tissue. The crowning moment came when I propped a vintage fan from the 1960s honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. and Bobby Kennedy inside a bed of silk violets that I bought in Manhattan’s floral district, all peering out of the top of the shopping bag.

When I went about creating a hostess gift for Cheryl Maedor of Gardenhouse who hosted a fab event in West Palm Beach last week for The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating With Thrift Shop Treasures, Flea Market Objects, and Vintage Details, all I had to do was open my wardrobe trunk full of

vintage handbags for another Hooch Bag creation!

She looks all innocent and proper from the exterior -- her chic Parisian frame crafted especially for Saks Fifth Avenue back in the day. And why, she is even sporting a vintage Pierre Cardin scarf. But release her dainty clasp -- and woaaaah -- you discover she's a party gal packed with on-the-go margaritas, maraschino cherries, a TGI Fridays cocktail shaker, packs of candy cigarettes and a cordial glass to boot.

When it gets messy, she has a rain bonnet from Simmons Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kansas; if it's too hot, she's got a fan; and if she's looking for a travel destination, there's a 1940s brochure about Ponte Verdra on the Florida Coast.

Let's just say this daring lady is ready for anything!

A Revolutionary New Bag

When putting together one of my Hooch Bags, I sort of let the thrift gods lead the way. This bag is a very special one, made for LeAnn Stephenson, The Vintage Laundress, as a hostess gift for putting together a tremendous Bastille Day party at Uptown Modern in Austin, Texas....and for being such a wonderful, new friend.

I didn't have my normal cache of funny money, candy cigarettes or discrete nips, but I didn't let that stop me as I perused the Allemany Flea market in Los Angeles. First, the blue suede bag appeared, then the fan fron Air France, and he vintage Parisian postcards and finally the French books. The hilarious vintage nylons showed up in a Goodwill in Austin, and my friend Deb Kelt donated the French dictionary and the red and blue ribbon.

Et Voilà! A bag fit to cause a revolution!

My girls were on parade last week at the Miraval Living Retail Therapy show coordinated by Grace Group and my gre at pal Nancy Berger. They wriggled, they jiggled, and they giggled for four days until many of them go picked up and toted away.

So Long Sonya! Later Lola! Ta Ta Petula! and Goodbye Dolly! Oh, it's sad to see my gals go, but they'll be back soon enough -- after a little nip and tuck to keep them looking good.

Good Golly, Molly

I picked up Molly because she was a gorgeous and naturally green little bag made by Isaac Mizrahi for Target.

Not my typical vintage bag, but I loved her just the same. She appeared to be a literary type, seeming keeping her thoughts in a notebook as she wandered the woods and other dark places, until I noticed she was heading off with a nip of tequila in her folds. And then I read her observations one day -- woah does she have some tales to tell.

Oh my girls are out of their minds today since they discovered that my pal Ali who runs 21st-Century Hustle posted this great article about Hooch Bags by The Elegant Thrifter. They took the weekend off from shimmying and shaking at The Brooklyn Flea-Pop Up Market to re-group and get re-styled for their next outing.

Now the lovely pink Dolly clutch has been showing cleavage for a few weeks, all trussed up in a pretty silk scarf, carrying a trio of hard candy sticks and a nip of tequila but has been belly-aching about not getting enough attention. My gals worked overtime yesterday at the Brooklyn Flea Pop-Up Market, and I put Coco right on the front line, and guess what, she ran off with the first offer. I guess it was the discrete nip that made her loose and the spotted retro scarf that made her utterly and dreamily irresistible.

Lovely Natasha was once a time-honored 1940s Deco Whiting and Davis steel and mesh bag. She's certainly seen her share of good times, and how could she not with all that sparkle and shimmer sure to catch a fella's fancy.

If you venture out to Dumbo tomorrow to see The Elegant Thrifter at The Brooklyn Flea's Pop-Up Market it's guaranteed that you'll be treated to a trio of shimmering ladies who are in the process of getting the final touches of all their hoochiness for tomorrow's fabulous festivities.

When you get a bunch of glamor gals in the same room, there's bound to be a bunch of "bitchin' and a pissin' and a moanin'", as the legendary Dolly Parton puts it, and this one centers around stage names. Two glittery gold clutches want to be Marilyns, and I can see why. But you can't have two legends in one show, so I'll let them scratch it out.

But Donnatella is spot-on even before she's had a nip of vodka, a ciggie or two and a handful of happy pills. Oh, It's gonna be a spectacle -- for sure!

Pretty in Pink

I know it's a little far out to start thinking about spring, but these three beauties caught my eye today and got me thinking about the warmer weather just around the corner.

Here are three thrift-store lovelies in the innocent state before they get all hooched up to go out on the town.

One of the first bags I found was this perky fabric covered number by designer Ronny Kobo. I'm calling her Coco because she reminds me of a Chanel jacket.

Next Dolly appeared. All turned out in hot pink and accented by appliqued butterflies, this silky country queen is made by a brand called Geg Handmade.

Then my stargazing turned to the naive Natalie. Purely delightful in pale pink, this 1960s bag is by Paris Style, but made in the good ole US of A!
